Sun Shines on Skerries Again

After a hectic run in we woke to a a dry and cloudy day. I would take that if it stayed that way. Having donned shorts and sun lotion we headed to Skerries early to set up.

By the time we arrived, strong winds were blowing at the harbour. I felt decidedly underdressed. However, the South Beach was calm and much warmer. Obviously there is a microclimate around the harbour. Registration opened with Doncha, Yvonne and Jack testing out their new iPhone app for timing races. This appears to be a big success based on feedback from Doncha and Jack.

David began building transition and Tania was busy organising the run. Ditch had the marshals under control and everything looked good. Our biggest problem was getting buoys blown up but Lochlann managed it in the end with only a slight delay to the start.

We had the great honour of having Gerry Duffy to start the race and he gave us a few words at the briefing. An inspiring man.

It started to rain at exactly 11:56am almost as if on queue for the race start but it didn’t last long thankfully.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered on the beach for the start and encourage the swimmers as they emerged from the water.

It's always a relief to get the swim over and especially when the same number of swimmers come out as went in. The run was held in bright sunshine and everyone was encouraged by the large crowd of spectators.

There were some stunning performances and none more spectacular than Darren Hughes who had a full five minute lead from the swim in the super aquathlon. A lead he was to maintain to the finish

Emma Early (Ni Quirke) had a great race on home territory to win the Super Aquathlon Female race.

On the sprint fron we ran the final of the series and the Skerries race together. Eamon McConvey was a convincing winner of the sprint series final with Paul Broderick winning the Skerries sprint. 3Ds Maire Fox won the sprint series final while Debbie Burke won theSkerries female sprint convincingly.

Relay teams were evident in the sprint and super aquathlon with the Hudsons winning the Sprint relay and Ian Devlins team winning the super aquathlon relay.
